Blair’s Flawless Endgame
December 17th is Chairversary, the day Charles Bartholomew Bass and Blair Cornelia Waldorf finally said I do. As such it’s the day our fandom celebrates this iconic ship’s endgame. In honor of their 3rd Chairversary I wanted to show some appreciation for Blair’s endgame in particular. And when I say endgame I mean more than her final canon romantic partner (Chuck obvs). I mean how the show wrapped up her series long arcs.
Professional Life
After spending almost the entire series striving to become a powerful woman Blair finally achieves it as the head of Waldorf Designs. Notably Eleanor is a self-made woman so this is in effect a matriachal legacy. One thing I love about this is that Blair’s professional “power” is completely separate from any man. It’s one powerful woman entrusting her legacy to the next generations’s powerful woman
Maturity and Growth
Two things stand out to me: Blair hires Jenny for Waldorf Designs and Blair hosts Dan and Serena’s wedding in her home. These two things prove Blair has learned to forgive, let go and find real closure when people born outside her tight circle have done things to betray or upset her. It also suggests that she may have grown more tolerant of “outsiders” into her rarified world.
Family
By the series finale Blair is obviously very close to her mother Eleanor, step father Cyrus, second mother Dorota and her non-judging breakfast club family Nate and Serena. They are all warm fixtures in her life in the flash foward. In addition she’s traded in chilly judgmental Princess Sophie for a more agreeable and fun mother in law in the form of Lily van der woodsen.
Children
Blair had a devastating miscarriage in Season 5. By the series finale she is the mother of an adorable, well behaved (he helped Dorota by picking up his toys! lol) HAPPY little boy. Henry’s joy and happiness suggests Chuck and Eleanor were right when they predicted Blair would be an amazing mother.
Love
Blair always dreamed of marrying a real life Prince and in Season 5 she did. But just like with most of Blair’s A plans, the fairytale turned into a nightmare. She does end up married to a Prince of sorts (or rather a King) when she weds Chuck Bass but Chuck’s arc is more akin to the Beast from “Beauty and the Beast” than a clean cut wholesome Prince Charming.
But here is the thing about Blair: She may have dreamed of a simple fairytale but she’s not simple. She’s complicated and beautiful. She’s a firey empire building Queen not a passive Princess. She’s as much Grace Jones as she is Grace Kelly. Her partner in life should be someone that can match her, understand her and 100% accept her for who she is and not expect or ask her to change. The only character that fits that bill is the King to match her Queen: Charles Bartholomew “Chuck” Bass.
