There was noise all around him, a high-pitched, keening whine like a wounded animal and it took Viktor several seconds to realise that it was coming from himself. Curling in on himself he tried to stifle the noise but there was nothing he could do to prevent the sounds, each one cutting through his throat like shards of glass.
