Meta Monday

fangirlunderground:

Did my recent Zimbits / Check, Please! fic rec leave you wanting more ice gays, canon ships, and exclamation points? Well, then, get ready to trade your pie for a nice pork cutlet bowl, because today’s meta topic is Yuri!!! On Ice

I’m focusing on Yuuri, Victor, and Victuuri this time, but I certainly haven’t forgotten about Yuri ‘Furious Furry’ Plietski. In fact, check back next week for the Yurio and Otayuri sequel. 🐯

Yuri!!! On Ice – Victor/Yuuri

Anxiety in YOI by @v-niliforov, I’ve wanted to talk for So Long about the portrayal of anxiety in YOI but I’ve been having so much trouble putting together what I want to say in the most effective manner. I kept trying to come at this in a more analytical fashion, but considering that this is such a personally important topic to me, I’m going to try a more emotional approach. Something I don’t normally do.

The Argument Scene by @youremarvelous, […] This scene is short but it’s important. We tend to quantify closeness by the times we see Viktor and Yuuri kissing, hugging, or otherwise acting explicitly intimate, but this little argument is just as important in conveying a shared emotional intimacy between the two.

The Layers of Meanings Behind the Rings by @sachiro, So for VictuuriWeek day 7, I’d like to talk about the rings and all the various promises they hold. This post is written as a complimentary piece to @lazuliblade’s amazing meta here (2 metas for 2 rings) so please make sure to read that one as well! In this analysis, we’ll be looking at the various tie-ins the series has to the various layers of meaning represented by the rings.

How much does Yuuri know? by @aftgonice, Here’s something I’ve been wondering for a while. In Barcelona, Victor finds out that Yuuri doesn’t remember the banquet. […] It’s really not the right place and time for Victor and Yuuri to talk about it in depth, especially considering that the focus shifts right away to the rings they’re wearing and their meaning.

Loneliness in Yuri!!! On Ice by @catefish, […] While some may think Viktor and Yuuri are polar opposites, that is not entirely the case. They are not exactly opposites. The thing with relationships is that even if two people are on different sides of the spectrum, there is always bound to be a middle ground, call it that space in between overlapping circles in a Venn diagram.

one more thing about the airport scene by @victorsheartshapedsmile, Apart from the general awesomeness of this scene, there is one thing that makes it 200% better for me is the fact how different is this reunion from any other we’ve seen in the anime.

On Victor’s Love & On Victor’s Love: Eros and Agape by @victorsheartshapedsmile, […] Victor couldn’t decide between Eros and Agape because he has seen them as completly separete feelings, however he found out that his love for Yuuri can be sexual and uncondictional at the same time and it’s such a good character development.

The *Right* Hand by @little-crazy-misha-minion, Many people have mentioned that in Russia you wear your wedding and engagement rings on your right hand. I’ve seen many people get excited and wonder if Yuuri and/or the producers knew about it. But you know what NO ONE HAS POINTED OUT? Something that may be the key to solving this little mystery…

Victor and Yuuri switch roles throughout their ice dance by @thatshamelessyaoishipper, I’m honestly so grateful for the creditless Stammi Vicino duet from vol 6 and the official bonus manga because they confirm what I thought before but wasn’t certain of because of the credits which got in the way and because we only got to see like half of Yuuri’s exhibition. And what I’m talking about here is that Victor and Yuuri switch roles throughout their ice dance. And yes, I mean female and male roles.

Victor believed he was getting laid on night one by @vityanikiforova, We need to take a moment to appreciate how Viktor Nikiforov, inventor of being extra, completely misread Yuuri and was firmly believing he would get laid on night one.

Victor’s Masks by @v-niliforov, […] This is the first glimpse of Victor we get within canon. Well, beyond the opening sequence with Yuuri watching Victor skate as they grow up but I think we can all agree that was outside of canon and can be discarded here. Anyway. It’s a damn good first glimpse. As you’ve probably already noticed, Victor’s eyes are covered. Deliberately. Dude fuckin does a twirl and the camera is framed in such a way that we don’t get to see his eyes until he looks up for the cameras. That’s an interesting touch, for several reasons.

Was Viktor Annoyed at Yuuri? (Or why Viktor Nikiforov was such a bully in Ep. 2 and 3) by @lostadult, You know how we can’t seem to read Viktor’s character in the early episodes? Is he on Yuuri’s side? Or is he really a bad guy? I think what lent to the confusion is that there were circumstances that we did not know at the time. Now though, we know that Viktor came to Japan by Yuuri’s invitation, which Yuuri conveniently forgot, leaving Viktor in the cold – confused, alone and friendless, surrounded by strangers in mother-effing Japan.

Why I think Victor and Yuuri definitely 1000% did kiss by @iruutciv, I know people have analysed the Victuuri kiss to death and it’s already been like 2 days but. My friend is still not convinced about the kiss so I just wanted to explain to her why I believe that Victor and Yuuri actually kissed. I’m not even gonna touch the contextual stuff since that may be (sigh) “open to interpretation”. I’m just gonna analyse the screenshots.

Yuuri is an unreliable narrator by @v-niliforov, I’ve been toying with the idea for a long time that some of the things Yuuri says, especially in the first couple episodes, are not exactly the truth and should be looked into farther. Honestly, we knew Yuuri was unreliable the moment the show opened–he referred to himself as “dime-a-dozen,” when he is literally the only male skater certified by the JSF within canonverse.

Yuuri Katsuki is a sucker for PDA by @livixbobbiex, Okay so I see a characterisation I totally disagree with incredibly often, and that’s the fact that Yuuri, being stereotypically Japanese, is uncomfortable with PDA. And whilst I agree that this headcanon is kind of cute and allows for some great extra!Viktor content, I think it’s fundamentally wrong.

Yuuri and Victor taught each other Life & Love by @swiftgirl01, Everyone wants success. When you choose a field or career, you always aim for the ultimate post or the ultimate title. No one wants to fail. Certainly not Yuuri Katsuki. I feel that he would not have retired even if Victor hadn’t come into his life. More than anything Yuuri failed to notice the love and support he had around him. For the longest time he felt that he was fighting alone. What do you do when you are at the lowest? You go home to mom.
